Press conference for the launch of the new Artificial Intelligence HUB (AI): “Timișoara Research in Artificial Intelligence Network (TRAIN)”
On this occasion, Professor Bernhard Schölkopf, director at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen, Germany, honored us with his presence. Another special guest was Professor Pedro Real, from the University of Seville, Spain. The conference was led by the Rector of the West University of Timișoara, Prof. Dr. Marilen Pirtea, who together with the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Prof. Dr. Daniela Zaharie and the Project coordinator, A. Prof. Dr. Darian Onchis, provided details regarding the AI Hub activity. The conference was attended also by the representatives of major local IT companies and by traditional partner institutions of WUT: Mr. Valentin Mureșan (personal advisor to the mayor of Timișoara, SmartCity and Digitalization, manager of Intel Romania), Mr. Sabin Totorean (Global Enterprise & Public Sector Sales Director, Nokia), Mr. Sorin Maxim (General Manager of ADR West), Ms. Cătălina Dodu (Global CyberSecurity Services PreSales Director, Atos IT Solutions and Services), Mr. Raul Horhat (General Manager, Cmed) and Mr. Ștefan Iarca (co-founder of XVision). They all addressed supportive messages regarding the future of the AI Hub.
Timisoara Research in Artificial Intelligence Network (TRAIN), aims to become a HUB for boosting the AI development in the Banat region, with a national and European perspective. With the overall embedding of intelligent systems in the digital tools that we use on a daily basis, we are experiencing great societal changes in both the academia and in the IT industry.
Recent times, have shown us that we can transfer a large part of our work online and the artificial intelligence is the main vector of progress in our cyber world. Also, we noticed an increased blurring of the limits between academia and industry in the fields of education and research. Thus, industry has become a major player in the relevant AI conferences and leading research journals, while the recruitment of our talented students is happening already at a very early stage of their university training.
At the same time, intelligent systems powered by novel machine learning algorithms have become black boxes with the use of deep neural networks having an extremely large number of parameters. Therefore, our focus is towards the progress of artificial intelligence that is ethical and intelligible to the user. In this context, TRAIN proposes the following services to the regional community and beyond:
AI.Hub:: the collaborative AI forum with no boundaries between academia and industry, offering to inter-share the knowledge existenting in the region and eventually to become a national pole in explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) that can attract AI specialists and industry R&D in the region.
XAION:: one of the first platforms for Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) competitions, created to meet the industry needs for outsourcing their AI challenges. Instead of hiring an intern to experiment with an AI prototype, why not create a competition and select the best possible solution from a large pool of participants.
XAIBOT:: A trilingual chatbot (English, Romanian, Serbian) offering guidance related to the XAI concepts, dedicated to meet the needs of the users in the region.
XAI.Pro:: A complete implementation and deployment of an XAI project with an intuitive visual interface, to understand the power of the explainable AI technology (in Romanian).
XAI.Doc:: A considerable resource of up to date and curated information on all facets of explainable artificial intelligence.
AI.Education:: Support for AI education in the region, with internationally trained professors and experienced practitioners. We offer machine learning, intelligent systems, biostatistics and bioinformatics courses.
AI.Europa:: Scientific collaboration with ELLIS (European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems) and institutional collaboration with UNITA, an alliance of six European comprehensive research universities (http://univ-unita.eu).
TRAINews:: A newsletter to keep up with the recent developments in the field and to popularize the AI research results.
